A box of hard particles, let go from one low-entropy corner. Every collision is elastic and perfectly reversible — and still the gas spreads and never re-gathers, because there are astronomically more ways to be spread out than packed in a corner. Then press Reverse time: in ideal mode the gas streams back into the corner, proving the law is symmetric; in real mode a single 1e-9 nudge is enough — molecular chaos eats it, and the past is lost.
Ω is the number of microstates that look like the current macrostate. The corner has vanishingly few; "spread out" has almost all of them — so that is where the gas goes. Engraved on Boltzmann’s tombstone.
What the instrument plots: coarse-grain the box into cells, count the occupancy pᵢ, sum. It is maximal at a uniform spread — the Gibbs/Shannon form of the same quantity.
The velocity distribution relaxes to Maxwell–Boltzmann (the line in the histogram), and H falls monotonically: the H-theorem. The temperature never changes — only the shape does.
Loschmidt’s objection: reversible micro-laws can’t logically give an irreversible world. The resolution is the Past Hypothesis — the universe began in a low-entropy state — plus sensitive dependence, which is why real reversal fails.
The gas willreturn arbitrarily close to its start — after a time that dwarfs the age of the universe. "Never," in practice, is a statement about how long you’d wait.
This is the deepest cut at the question underneath the whole rack — why does time have a direction when the laws of motion do not? The answer is not in the particles; it is in the counting, plus the brute fact that the past was ordered. It is the statistical-mechanics sibling of The Threshold (INST·04, the same Boltzmann counting at criticality), and the macroscopic shadow of the chaos arc: the sensitive dependence that The Divergence and The Attractor measure is exactly what makes the reversal unrecoverable. Where the quantum wing evolves by a reversible unitary that conserves |ψ|², this shows where irreversibility actually enters — not in the law, but in coarse-graining and the low-entropy boundary the universe was handed. It is the clock the engine runs on.
