Your Universe of Digital Possibilities
Classical physics, applied to a glowing oven without a single error: every standing wave gets its fair share kT, and the law that follows fits the long-wave light exactly. Then sum the modes. The classical oven holds infinite energy — and a real one does not vaporise the room.
Equipartition, applied without error: a cavity holds 8πν²/c³ standing waves per unit volume and frequency, and each carries kT. Exact where hν ≪ kT; summed over every mode it diverges — the ultraviolet catastrophe.
The same law The Line reads per wavelength, written per frequency to sit beside Rayleigh–Jeans. For hν ≪ kT the exponential is 1 + hν/kT and it is the classical law; for hν ≫ kT the mode costs too much to excite and freezes out. Its integral is finite: aT⁴.
The total energy in a cavity, and the power from each square metre of a black surface, grow as the fourth power of the temperature — finite, and measured, before anyone could derive the spectrum it sums.
The hotter the body, the bluer its peak: a kiln at 1600 K peaks in the infrared near 1.8 µm, the Sun near 500 nm.
A rigorous theory can fail in the sum of its successes. Rayleigh–Jeans is equipartition applied without error and fits the long wavelengths exactly; summed over all modes it demands infinite energy, and the world declines. The residual is the divergence; the salvage is the dead law’s limit-correctness and the quantum its failure forced. The Wavefunction owns quantization — this stage is the wound the quantum closed — and The Line reads the same Planck curve from a star. In the edition, The Ash is the other ledger that closed only when everything was counted.
