Your Universe of Digital Possibilities
One seed sits in the middle. A particle appears at the edge and random-walks — no aim, no memory — until it touches the seed, where it sticks and freezes. Release a thousand more and they do not make a blob: they grow a branching tree, because an exposed tip intercepts walkers long before they reach the sheltered bays behind it. That screening repeats at every scale, so the result is a fractal of dimension D ≈ 1.71 — the same law behind soot, coral, copper electrodeposits, river networks and a bolt of lightning. Pure chance, drawing structure.
Release one particle far away. It random-walks — Brownian, undirected — until it touches the cluster, then freezes there forever. Repeat a million times. A seed becomes a branching tree.
The walker-arrival probability obeys Laplace’s equation — the same discrete Laplacian The Skin diffuses with — and the cluster grows fastest where that field is steepest. Drift biases the walkers and the tree leans into the wind.
The arrival-probability field is harmonic — it satisfies this same five-point stencil The Skin diffuses with. Solving it says where the next blind walker is most likely to land: the exposed tips, never the screened fjords.
The number of particles within radius R scales as a power of R, and the exponent D ≈ 1.71 is fractional — denser than a curve, sparser than the plane. The cluster is mostly empty space, at every scale.
A bump that pokes out intercepts more wandering walkers, so it grows faster and pokes out more — a runaway that sharpens tips and starves the bays between them. That instability is why the branches never fill in, and why they look the same at every magnification.
This is the rack’s growth instrument — structure precipitating out of pure randomness. It is built from The Walk (INST·19): every particle is one of its random walkers, only here a million of them freeze into a shape. The shape is fractal, so it is kin to The Set (INST·21) — but where the Mandelbrot set is drawn by a deterministic rule, this one is drawn by chance, and the dimension is irrational, measured not decreed. It shares its harmonic field and discrete Laplacian with The Skin (INST·06), and it is the spatial twin of The Sandpile(INST·29): both self-organize a scale-free object with no knob tuned — there scale-free in time, here in form. The Perception Engine’s standing claim, once more: the structure was never imposed, it fell out of the dynamics.
