Your Universe of Digital Possibilities
Two price charts climb the same distance with the same volatility — the same returns, to the last tick, because one is the other with its days shuffled. One trend is momentum; one is luck wearing its coat. Pick the one that remembers, twelve times — then measure variance at two strides and watch two hundred shuffles build the line between them.
If steps are uncorrelated their variances add, and a q-step move has exactly q times the variance of one step — a ratio of one at every horizon. Persistence (positive autocorrelations ρk) compounds the ratio above one; mean reversion pulls it below. Lo and MacKinlay’s overlapping, bias-corrected estimator made it a test of the random walk.
A sum of i.i.d. steps goes nowhere on average, yet its spread grows as the square root of the number of steps — the signature √t law of every diffusion.
The exact central interval for K, the count of wins in n independent plays at win probability p — computed from the rules alone, before a single play. A record inside it is the rules working; a record outside it happens one time in twenty, and the band says so in advance. When the chance of each play is fixed before it is played but differs from play to play, the same band comes from the Poisson-binomial sum.
The fifth twin forges by surrogate: the original itself with one kind of order — time — destroyed, so every marginal holds by construction. The Wire is its shuffle sibling, the same Fisher–Yates module turned on chaos; The Walk owns the √t law the ratio tests against; and The Oracle stages the other half of the lesson — the eye invents trends, and a forecaster must not.
