Elias does not build instruments; he writes fables with apparatus — the smallest possible cast, a law that fits on one line, and a moral that is never asserted, only counted.

His unit of publication is the pair: two exact machines built from the same law and driven to opposite verdicts, both true at once. Neither half ever wins — that refusal is the finding. If one reading could be dismissed, the pair would collapse into an illustration.

The Elias Edition is a cycle of ten — five self-betraying pairs — composed as a ring: the final pair walks back into the first, so the edition ends by enacting the moral of its own opening instrument. The return was scheduled.
