Atoms are knotted vortex rings in the aether: the knot type is the element, and a knotted ring can never untie. Blow rings, tie Tait’s knots, build a periodic table out of string. Then ask an atom the one question it owes an answer: what colour do you glow?
In an ideal fluid the circulation round a vortex never changes and its lines move with the fluid (Helmholtz 1858; Kelvin’s theorem 1869) — so a knotted vortex ring can never untie. True, and the seed of Kelvin’s atoms.
How fast a smoke ring of radius R and core a carries itself forward — Kelvin’s formula, the motion the vortex atom was built on. It sets a speed from free numbers; nothing in it is a wavelength.
A polynomial fingerprint built by switching one crossing at a time. It tells the trefoil from its mirror image — something no amount of wiggling can do by eye — and it fell out of the algebra of quantum observables, not geometry.
Hydrogen’s levels, the formula The Orbital solves: their differences are the sharp lines the spectroscope counts (Balmer’s four in the visible). The vortex atom had no number like n in it — nothing a knot type could fix.
Kelvin’s atoms explained no chemistry and founded a mathematics. The kernel was a real theorem — circulation is conserved, a knotted ring is stable — and the structure built on it predicted not one spectral line. The Knot owns the modern subject, from Tait’s tables to the Jones polynomial; this stage is its origin story. The Line and The Orbital own the spectra the knots could not give. In the edition, The Null is the same aether, convicted by a fringe.
